In practice, the installation involves gas or electrical work, venting, water lines, safety devices, and code requirements that vary by unit type and location. THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT

An inspector checks that the venting is correctly sloped and sized, that the relief valve discharge pipe is routed to a safe location, and that the unit is properly strapped if required for seismic or code reasons. TESTING BEFORE THE JOB IS DONE

A complete installation ends with testing, not just turning the water back on. This includes checking for gas leaks with a proper detection method, verifying the pilot or ignition system fires correctly, confirming the temperature setting, and checking all fittings for leaks under full water pressure. A rushed job skips this step and leaves problems for the homeowner to discover later, sometimes in the form of a leak that damages flooring or a relief valve that never seats properly.
