Installing a water-saving toilet follows the same basic process as any toilet replacement: matching the rough-in measurement, replacing the wax ring, and checking the flange for damage. One extra consideration with low-flow and dual-flush models is supply line pressure, since some pressure-assisted models require a minimum water pressure to function properly. It's worth checking the manufacturer's minimum pressure requirement against the home's typical water pressure before installing a pressure-assisted unit, particularly in homes with older or smaller supply lines.

GETTING THE MOST FROM THE UPGRADE

A water-saving toilet only delivers its full benefit when it is installed and functioning correctly. A running toilet, even a low-flow one, can waste more water in a week than years of flushing savings would offset. After installation, check that the fill valve shuts off completely and that the flapper seals without running.
