A slab leak happens when a water or drain line running underneath a concrete foundation develops a leak. Because the pipe is buried in or under the slab, the water often has nowhere obvious to go, which means damage can build for weeks or months before anyone notices. WHAT CAUSES SLAB LEAKS

Most slab leaks trace back to a handful of causes. Corrosion in copper piping is common in older homes, especially when the water has high mineral content. Soil movement from expansive clay puts constant pressure on pipes, eventually causing cracks or full breaks at joints. Abrasion happens when a pipe rubs against the concrete or nearby gravel as the ground settles, slowly wearing through the pipe wall. Poor original installation, including pipes that were bent sharply or under-supported, also creates weak points that fail years later.

REPAIR OPTIONS ONCE THE LEAK IS FOUND

Once the location and pipe material are confirmed, there are generally three paths forward. Spot repair involves accessing the exact leak location, either through the slab or from below in a crawlspace, and replacing the damaged section of pipe. Pipe rerouting avoids the slab entirely by running a new line through walls or the attic, which is often more practical when the original line is old or has multiple weak points. Pipe lining or trenchless repair uses an epoxy coating pulled through the existing pipe to seal cracks without major excavation, which works well for certain pipe materials and leak types.
